Officers from the Yonkers Police Department’s Traffic Unit, Westchester County Department of Public Safety, and New York State Police troopers conducted a traffic enforcement detail in Yonkers targeting fraudulent and counterfeit license plates.

Officers targeted many out-of-state temporary license plates, paper tags, and dealer assigned plates.

In total, 97 summonses were doled out, 30 vehicles were impounded and one suspect was arrested for a stolen car that was recovered.

Yonkers police officials said that due to the pandemic, the DMV in New York and other states reduced services to avoid spreading the virus, resulting in a delay with the assignment of registration plates.

“As services have gradually been restored, some individuals have taken advantage of the situation and produced fraudulent paper and temporary tags under the belief that law enforcement was being deferred,” officials said. They were mistaken.

“Many of these vehicles, unregistered, uninspected, and uninsured pose a public safety risk to motorists and pedestrians,” they added. “Navigating public services during the pandemic can be complicated, however, it is no excuse for illegal or unlawful behavior.”
